How to Get Out of Your Own Way

How to Get Out of Your Own Way

By Donna Vail

We live in a busy world. Most of us juggle schedules and agendas. It’s easy to allow ourselves to be carried away by all that we need to do, forgetting that we need to be.

Take a moment to step back and consider slowing down. Now this doesn’t mean that your neglecting your responsibilities or that you will be bored just because you are not on the run. By giving yourself time to process life, time to reflect on solutions and being willing to allow the answer to flow to you in it’s perfect timing is actually taking full responsibility.

Parents Inspired to Action:

  • First things first, your schedule. The most successful people in the world use the day-timer, month-at-a-glance and day-at-a-glance rather than electronic devices. This allows you to see it all layed out and realize how you’ve been packing your schedule or not diligently filling the time. It’s true that if you don’t fill your schedule with meaningful inspired tasks, something strange and weird is likely to show up, usually in the form of chaos. When making your commitments, first schedule yourself time for inspiration. This includes time to read, study and write (time to grow and improve yourself), time to meditate or sit quietly and rejuvenate, time to do what you love and what’s highest on your values.
  • Let go of what no longer serves you. Are there appointments or extra curricular activities you can let go of to create space for you and your family? This is a good time to share with your children the important lesson of choosing according to your highest values so you are engaged in what truly inspires you rather than just filling time and running here and there.
  • Plan your day the night before. Decide when it works best for you, either when you close down your office at the end of the day or at night before you go to bed, write in your schedule the tasks that need to be done the next day. Notice what commitments you already have at appointed times and purposefully set yourself up for a successful day. When you wake in the morning you can flow right into your day inspired knowing what you have to do. This is going to increase your success in all areas of your life because now you are living on purpose.
  • Model what you want to see in your children. If your children are having trouble meeting responsibility or staying on point, rather than reprimanding or lecturing them, look within yourself first. Ask, “What area of my life is displaying this type of behavior.” Usually when you ask, the answer will be close to follow. When you are modeling success principles, living inspired and taking responsibility for all areas of your life, your children will be inspired to do the same in their life. While they will still need guidance and to learn by trial and error you will simply; provide, guide and step aside.
