Breaking Old Patterns

“We must always change, renew, rejuvenate ourselves; otherwise we harden.” – Goethe

Here are some ways that you can break old patterns and experience the kind of renewal that will lead to better use of your time and energy:

  • Go without speaking for a morning or a whole day.
  • Skip a meal, or do an all-day fast.
  • Take a break from technology -cell phones, computer, television, iTunes, you name it –for a prescribed period of time. (Base the time frame on a realistic goal.)
  • Go on a news fast for a day, a weekend, or a week.
  • Don’t read anything at all for a day, a weekend, or a week; sit still, refrain from consuming ideas and musings of other people.
  • For a prescribed period of time, don’t talk about anyone who is not present, and notice how different this feels from the usual round of gossip and unconscious chitchat.
  • Wake up an hour or half an hour earlier than usual, and use that time regularly for a trip into sacred time.
  • Do an all-night vigil outdoors, next to a bonfire, on a mountaintop, or beside a body of water.
  • Get off the energy grid for a day. Turn off the power in your house, and reconnect to a different kind of energy.
