Ask Donna Vail: How Can I Manage My Reading and Studies While Homeschooling My Children?

This Week’s Question Answered:
Q: How can I manage my reading and studies while guiding my children as we homeschool? Sometimes I get overwhelmed with so much to read and keep up with, I don’t know how to balance it all.

A: Refuel yourself and let off some of the pressures. If you’re like me there’s a growing stack of “to be read” books, articles to highlight and learn from as well as all the information that you may be processing as a homeschool parent.

I love to read so much, that if reading was all there is I would be blissfully happy reading and reading. As with anything in excess it can lead to burn out. How many times have you sat up late reading technical or how to’s only to experience the brain busy cranking ideas all night long, leaving you unrested? It is advisable to choose your reading diet carefully. Just as food for a healthy diet you want to feed the brain a balanced diet. Some meaty subjects to chew on along with some dessert for fun and nice hot tea to feed the soul. And allow yourself the freedom to get rid of the books you just don’t like or don’t even want to finish. You wouldn’t force yourself to eat something that didn’t taste good. So let go of the books that are not really serving you.

Here is a good balance to practice:

  • Spend 1-2 hours a day (or several times a week) reading and studying a fact based book.
  • At lunch time or on the weekends look over magazines, brochures or light articles.
  • At night read a fiction book for about an hour at bedtime. This relaxes the brain and gives it many imaginative pictures and adventures to enjoy. A good way to move into a restful night.
  • And of course don’t forget to leave room for your spiritual reading and meditation. This is a must but everyone has different views, so I will leave that up to you.
