Ask Donna Vail: How do I let go of traditional teaching in my homeschool?

This Week’s Question Answered:
Q: I want to let go of the curriculum and traditional teaching. I am currently using and just follow whatever comes up but there is fear there on my part. How did you get past that? Or did you ever have that?A: Yes, I have had plenty of fear with homeschooling. I think every parent does in part to provide the best possible education and in trying to forsee everything the child will need. Most fears arrive in the early years when you’re just getting started and stems from lack of confidence in directing the education of your children. We are programmed all our lives to let the “experts” do it. Who better than you, Moms and Dads to direct the education and upbringing of your child. As you evolve in your homeschooling, and incorporate Inspired Education principles you will learn how to listen to inspiration, that intuitive voice within that keeps you on the right path.

The way I got past the fear was implementing something that is tried and tested for centuries and believing in my children. It is equally important to begin with the end in mind and have a well organized plan that covers what children need to learn for a superior education that allows them to do extremely well on SAT’s and go to college or be well prepared for other life choices. I’ve studied education as far back as highschool so it’s always been a passion of mine.

One size doesn’t fit all and that is the beauty of homeschooling, you have the flexibility for your family and even individually with each child. Let them become master scholars rather than know trivia, a little about a lot.
