Dumbing Down America

The public education system of today is anything but modern and was created for the industrial age. Today’s show is urgent and controversial and will appeal to any who harbor doubts about the current education system. John Taylor Gatto has found that independent study, community service, large doses of solitude and a thousand different apprenticeships with adults of all walks of life are the keys to helping children break the thrall of our conforming society. John urges all of us to get schools out of the way and find ways to re-engage children and families in actively controlling our culture, economy and society. The realization of personal potential requires a different way of growing up and learning, one Gatto calls “open-source”.

Guest: John Taylor Gatto

Author, speaker and retired school teacher of 29 years, John Taylor Gatto has published several books on education. From his first title “Dumbing Us Down” to his latest “Weapons of Mass Instruction”, he promotes homeschooling, and specifically unschooling. After completing his graduate work as a young man, he worked as a writer and held several odd jobs before beginning his teaching career. He was named New York City Teacher of the year in 1989, 1990, and 1991, and New York State Teacher of the Year in 1991. He then wrote a letter announcing his retirement, titled “I Quit, I Think”, to the op-ed pages of the Wall Street Journal, saying that he no longer wished to “hurt kids to make a living.” He then began a public speaking and writing career, and has received several awards, including the Alexis de Tocqueville Award for Excellence in Advancement of Educational Freedom in 1997. John is currently working on a 3-part documentary about compulsory schooling, titled The Fourth Purpose.
